September 28, 2022—Florence Copper recently hosted District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy and his beloved dog Mishka for a site tour. Located off Hunt Highway in the Town of Florence, Florence Copper is an innovative and proven in-situ copper recovery (ISCR) project that is bringing jobs and opportunity to Pinal County. Florence Copper already has produced more 1 million pounds of made-in-the-USA copper during its Production Test Facility (PTF) and gave Supervisor Serdy a behind-the-scenes look into the operation that made it all happen.
Florence Copper is not a traditional mine. The operation’s unique ISCR process does not require blasting, open pits, tailings, or excavation of millions of tons of rock. Rather, ISCR requires very limited land disturbance, energy, and water, and afterwards, the land can be redeveloped for housing, farming, or myriad other uses. This environmentally sound operation led Florence Copper to be named a finalist for two environmental awards by Arizona Forward.
Over the project lifetime, Florence Copper will contribute an estimated $2.1 billion to Pinal County's economy, along with nearly 500 direct and indirect jobs. That's all while producing the copper we need for modern life. Florence Copper was happy to host Supervisor Serdy and Mishka to learn more about this unique operation.
