The Town of Florence and Florence Copper celebrated the importance of copper in Summer 2023. Inspired by Air Conditioning Appreciation Days, which take place July 3 to August 15, Florence Mayor Tara Walter issued a proclamation recognizing the role of copper in everyday life, including as a vital input to air conditioning units, and named June 30, 2023, ‘Florence Copper Day’ in the Town of Florence.

Aside from celebrating Florence Copper, June 30th marked a special day in the Town of Florence because Florence Copper Manager of Communications & Public Affairs Sophie Dessart had the privilege of serving as the first ever Florence ‘Mayor for the Day.’

Dessart won the chance to be Florence Mayor for the Day during a charity auction during the Ninth Annual Paladin Winter Gala. The event supports Paladin Sports Outreach, a non-profit established to use sports and recreation activities to teach valuable life lessons to youth in Pinal County. Dessart attended the gala as a guest of the Town of Florence.

During her day as Mayor, Dessart toured Town facilities and met employees from various departments, including Town Hall, Community Services, Community Development, the Florence Police Department, and Florence Fire Station #1. After these tours, Florence Mayor Tara Walter and members of Town of Florence staff toured the Florence Copper site. The day ended with the mayoral proclamation recognizing the role of copper in everyday life and naming June 30, 2023, ‘Florence Copper Day’ in Florence.
